Horton Places 2nd at U.S. Qualifier

NORMAN, Okla. - OU senior Jonathan Horton finished second in the all-around competition at the 2007 U.S. Men's Gymnastics Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Saturday. Horton tallied an 88.00 in the second session after recording the top score on Thursday afternoon (90.05) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Guillermo Alvarez edged out Horton, 178.100 to 178.050. David Durante of Garwood, N.J./Team Chevron, was third at 174.900.

Horton tied Alvarez for the top spot on the floor exercise and finished third on the still rings and fourth on both the vault and pommel horse.

"Jon did well this weekend and put himself into a good position for the USA Championship meet after finishing second overall," OU head coach Mark Williams said. "We will use this as a base to make the team for the 2007 World Championships and there, look to help the United States qualify for the 2008 Olympics."

In addition to serving as a qualifying event for the 2007 Visa Championships (Aug. 15-18 in San Jose, Calif.), the U.S. Qualifier also serves as a basis for selecting the American teams for the World University Games, Pan American Games and World Championships later this year.

Horton's former OU teammate Jamie Henderson also performed on day two and was second on the still rings. Horton and Henderson are both currently members of the U.S. Senior National Team and are pre-qualified for the Visa Championships.
