NORMAN, Okla. The 2007 Oklahoma women's gymnastics season was a time for new beginnings. In June, the Sooners hired three-time Big 12 Coach of the Year K.J. Kindler away from Iowa State with the hopes that she could take the OU program to the next level.
Kindler's impact was felt immediately as Oklahoma nearly ended then-third-ranked Alabama's 30-year-old home winning streak in the teams' season opener in Tuscaloosa on Jan. 12. With that confidence the Sooners rattled off a streak of 12 consecutive victories, nine of which came on the road, including an upset of then-No. 6 Nebraska in Lincoln, a feat no OU team had accomplished since 1991.
Oklahoma finished second at the Big 12 Championships on March 31 in Columbia, Mo., and senior Brittney Koncak-Schumann won a share of the floor exercise title.
The Sooners headed back to Tuscaloosa for the NCAA Central Regional on April 14. With the top two teams earning bids to the NCAA Championships, OU tied Kindler's former Iowa State squad for second place. The final qualifying spot was decided by a tiebreaker with Oklahoma edging the Cyclones 233.4-233.2 to earn a school-record fourth straight trip to the NCAA Championships.
Prior to the season Kindler said it was her goal to make OU a regular in the "Super Six," the teams that advance to the NCAA Team Finals. The 2007 Sooners nearly made it happen, finishing just 0.375 points behind third-place Nebraska for the final qualifying spot in session one at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
Junior Kiara Redmond finished as a first team All-American on vault, floor exercise and in the all-around. Her three All-America honors were the most for an OU gymnast in a single season since Olympian Kelly Garrison won five in 1988. In the NCAA Event Finals, Redmond tied for fourth in the nation on floor and tied for eighth on vault.
Koncak-Schumann, in her final collegiate competition, earned first team All-America honors on the vault, finishing in a tie for third in the Event Finals.
As a team, the Sooners finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish in program history.

Making History
2007 was a season of milestones for Oklahoma women's gymnastics. The Sooners posted the program's best finish, eighth, at the NCAA Championships. The eighth-place finish also guaranteed OU its highest final poll position in school history, besting the team's No. 9 ranking in the final 1989 poll. The team also recorded a historic win at Nebraska, something no OU team had accomplished since 1991. By qualifying for a fourth straight NCAA Championships, the 2007 Sooners also extended a school-record postseason streak.
All-Americans
Both Brittney Koncak-Schumann (V) and Kiara Redmond (AA, V, FX) earned first team All-America honors for the first time in their careers in 2007. Both gymnasts earned second team distinction in the all-around and on floor in 2006. The duo also became the first Sooners to be named All-Americans in back-to-back seasons since Erin LaBarr earned the honor on the uneven bars in 2004 and 2005.
Academic All-Big 12
Five Sooners earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2007. Seniors Brittney Koncak-Schumann and Lori Winn each earned first team honors, as did junior Caitlin Hinkis and sophomore Haley DeProspero. Sophomore Ashley Jackson was named to the second team. Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league gymnastics squad consisted of 15 first team members combined with six on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Big 12 Awards
Four OU gymnasts accounted for six weekly conference awards during the 2007 regular season. Brittney Koncak-Schumann was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week on three occasions, while Lori Winn, Kiara Redmond and Ashley Jackson each earned Event Specialist of the Week honors.
Meet Titles Won
The 2007 OU squad accounted for 58 individual event titles, dwarfing the 44 titles won in 2006. Brittney Koncak-Schumann led the way with 26 event crowns, including a team-leading six in the all-around. Kiara Redmond more than tripled her win total from last season (5) with 17 event titles in 2007, including five all-around wins. Ashley Jackson added seven titles, while Lori Winn had five and Haley DeProspero two. Freshman Jackie Flanery also earned a vault crown in her first season with the Sooners.
As a team, Oklahoma claimed 34 event titles (8 each on vault and bars and 9 each on beam and floor), besting the 29 won the previous season. The Sooners swept all four events on six different occasions, including all four home meets.
