NORMAN, Okla. -- As the 2007 Major League Baseball season is underway, seven former Sooners appeared on the opening day rosters across the country on Monday.
Mark Redman (Atlanta Braves), Russ Ortiz (San Francisco Giants), Jason Bartlett (Minnesota Twins), Reggie Willits (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), Geoff Geary and Greg Dobbs (Philadelphia Phillies) and Greg Norton (Tampa Bay Devil Rays) are representing the Oklahoma baseball program on the sport's premier stage.
Redman (1994-95), listed fifth in the Braves' rotation, was a 2006 All-Star with the Kansas City Royals after collecting 11 wins and 76 strikeouts.
Also listed fifth on his team's rotation is Ortiz (1993-95). Oritz, now with the Giants, made 26 appearances (11 starts) for the Orioles a year ago, accumulating 44 strikeouts.
The Minnesota Twins have Bartlett (2000-01) listed as the starting shortstop for the 2007 season. Bartlett put together a solid 2006 campaign in his first full year with Minnesota, with a .309 batting average and 32 RBIs.
Willits (2002-03) is listed as the backup center fielder for the Angels this season. Willits made his professional debut last season where he appeared in 28 MLB games and hit .267 with a .411 on-base percentage.
Geary (1997-98), listed third in the Phillies bullpen, had a 7-1 record in 2006 with a 2.96 ERA. He finished the season with a three-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Dobbs (2001), Geary's new teammate on the Phillies, is listed as the third-string third baseman on the team's roster but also appears on the depth chart at first base and in left and right field. Dobbs had a .370 batting average in 23 games last season with the Mariners.
Norton (1991-93), who will begin the season on the Devil Rays 15-day disabled list, hit .296 with 17 home runs and 45 RBIs in 2006 for the Rays. Norton split time last season in Tampa Bay with 28 starts in the outfield and 22 more at first base while playing in 98 games overall.
