Baseball Pair Selected to POW List

NORMAN, Okla. -- Junior Joe Dunigan and senior Joseph Hughes were named to the "National Honor Roll" on Tuesday by the College Baseball Foundation for last week's performances. The duo played a significant role in leading OU to a 4-1 record last week and helping improve the club's top 25 ranking to No. 20 this week (Baseball America).

The CBF selects players each week to its award list and Dunigan and Hughes' selections mark the third week this season that an OU player was honored (Aaron Reza and Heath Taylor on March 6 and Aaron Baker on Feb. 27).

The No. 20 Sooners (17-6) are back in action on Tuesday, March 20 with a midweek contest against Dallas Baptist (13-10). First pitch at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas is set for 7 p.m.

Below is a closer look at Dunigan's and Hughes' performances last week:

The Sooners' outfielder hit .421 during last week's contests (8-for-19). Dunigan collected 14 total bases, including two doubles and his team-leading fourth homer, en route to collecting 11 RBIs in the five games. On March 14 against UTPA, Dunigan tied a career-high with three hits and set a season-high with four RBIs. He followed that up with another three-hit performance in the series opener against Michigan State and drove in two runs. Dunigan is currently riding a four-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 14 of the last 16 games.

He currently leads the Sooners with 26 RBIs and four home runs. He also ranks second on the team with 30 hits and third with a .353 batting average.

The left-hander recorded a 2-0 record in his two starts last week. In 13 1/3 innings pitched, Hughes struck out 13 batters and allowed one run off 13 hits and two walks. The McKinney, Texas, native recorded a 0.68 ERA and helped combine to record the Sooners' second shutout of the season. Against UTPA on March 13, he won his third straight start after tossing 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball. Hughes allowed one run and off two walks and struck out four. In Sunday's start against Michigan State, the lefty enjoyed arguably his best outing as a Sooner. In seven innings pitched, Hughes struck out a career-high nine batters and did not walk a batter or allow a run in his fourth win of the season. Hughes also collected three hits and two RBIs last week as the Sooners' starting center fielder.

Hughes is 4-1 this season on the mound with a 3.12 ERA and is also hitting .306 with seven RBIs while starting in centerfield.

The College Baseball Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, founded with the goals of recording the history of college baseball, as well as fostering an appreciation of the sport and those involved in it.

For the last three years, it has presented The Brooks Wallace Award to honor college baseball's top player which is dedicated to the memory of former Texas Tech shortstop and assistant coach. Wallace was a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977 to 1980.

The Sooners' Ryan Mottern was named to this year's preseason watch list.

A national panel of preeminent coaches, sports information directors, former winners and writers, who daily cover the sport, will select the College Baseball Foundations' annual Brooks Wallace Award winner.
