OU Wins on the Road at No. 21 ASU

February 09, 2007 | Women's Gymnastics

TEMPE, Ariz. For the second straight week, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team defeated a ranked team on the road.  The ninth-ranked Sooners finished first in the Arizona State tri-meet Friday night, defeating No. 21 Arizona State and California in front of 896 fans at Wells Fargo Arena.  OU beat No. 6 Nebraska in Lincoln on Feb. 2.

OU finished with a season high 196.400 team score.  The host Sun Devils were second with a 196.275, while Cal finished third at 190.900.

Senior Brittney Koncak-Schumann won her third all-around title of the season with a season-high 39.475.  The McQueeney, Texas, native also finished fourth on beam with a 9.9, tied for third on vault (9.825) and tied for second on floor with a season-high 9.875.

Final Scores

Koncak-Schumann once again clinched a Sooner win with a clutch 9.875 on the uneven bars in OU's final rotation, taking the event title.

"It's nice to know that when we're on the road the athletes are really competing well," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "That's going to be key when it comes to Regionals, Nationals and Big 12s.  Being able to say that we put together a great performance on the road is a wonderful thing, especially this early in the season."

Sophomore Ashley Jackson took her second event title of the season on vault, sharing first place with ASU's April Boone (9.85).

Junior Kiara Redmond set a career high with a 9.85 on bars to tie for second, and also finished second on floor with a season-high 9.875.

Several other Sooners set or tied career or season highs against the Sun Devils and Golden Bears.

Freshman Mary Mantle scored a career-best 9.825 to tie Koncak-Schumann for second on vault, while sophomore Haley DeProspero tied for second on beam with a career-high 9.925.  DeProspero also set a season high on floor with a 9.8.

Jackson and Redmond also tied their season highs on the floor exercise with a 9.85 and 9.875, respectively.

As a team, Oklahoma scored season event highs on floor (49.075) and bars (49.100).

"Our goals for this meet were to score 49s on bars and floor because we hadn't done that yet this season and we're perfectly capable of it," Kindler said.  "We achieved that, and to go six-for-six on beam when your starting on that event is not something many coaches can say they could do in a heartbeat.  It was really exciting to see them come out like that."

OU stays on the road next weekend with visits to Iowa State (Feb. 16) and Iowa (Feb. 18).  The Sooners return to the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman on March 3 to host Texas Woman's University.
