Horton Wins Consecutive MPSF Honors

NORMAN, Okla. For the second consecutive week, Oklahoma's Jonathan Horton has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week.

The Houston, Texas, native won his second straight all-around title with a 54.6 against Nebraska in Lincoln on Friday, Feb. 2.  Horton also won the high bar with a season-high 9.6 and took the pommel horse crown with an 8.8.  He also shared the vault title (8.9) and finished second on the parallel bars (9.35) and floor exercise (9.35).

In the latest GymInfo national rankings released on Feb. 5, Horton is No. 1 in the nation on the floor exercise and in the all-around and is the country's third-ranked gymnast on the p-bars.

Oklahoma gymnasts have now claimed three of the season's four conference honors.  In addition to Horton's consecutive wins, junior Jacob Messina earned Gymnast of the Week honors on Jan. 15.

Horton and teammate Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons will travel to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Winter Cup, Feb. 9-10.  The event helps determine spots on the U.S. National Team.  Horton earned a spot at last year's Winter Cup, finishing second in the all-around competition.

Fourth-ranked Oklahoma returns to the Howard McCasland Field House on Friday, Feb. 16 to take on club teams from the University of Texas and the University of Washington.
