Fourth Sooner Nabs Big 12 Honors

NORMAN, Okla. Sophomore Ashley Jackson has been named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week for Feb. 20, the conference announced Tuesday. The award is the first of her career. Jackson becomes the fourth different Sooner to garner Big 12 honors this season. Seniors Brittney Koncak-Schumann and Lori Winn and junior Kiara Redmond have also won weekly awards this season.

Jackson won her third and fourth event titles of the year in Oklahoma's wins at Iowa State (Feb. 16) and Iowa (Feb. 18). She took the vault title at ISU with a career-high tying 9.875, while tying for third on floor (9.825) and fourth on beam (9.825). The Hudsonville, Mich., native won the beam with a 9.825 at Iowa and recorded top four finishes on vault (9.8) and floor (9.825).

The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team rose to seventh in the GymInfo national rankings released on Feb. 19. The position is the Sooners' highest since standing No. 6 in the March 27, 2006 poll. OU started the 2007 season ranked 10th.

Oklahoma is also the No. 1 team in the Big 12 Conference, a spot the Sooners have not held since February 20, 2006.

By defeating Big 12 foe Iowa State on Feb. 16, the Sooners accomplished something that no OU team has done in the conference's history. With the win over the Cyclones, Oklahoma has swept the other three Big 12 teams in the regular season for the first time. OU defeated Missouri in Norman on Jan. 27 and bested Nebraska in Lincoln on Feb. 2.

The last time the Sooners swept their regular season conference opponents was 1991 when they beat Iowa State, Missouri and Nebraska in the Big Eight.

The 2007 OU squad (10-1) is off to the program's best start since the 2000 team started the season 11-1.

Oklahoma has the next week off before hosting Texas Woman's University at the Howard McCasland Field House on March 3.
