February 15, 2007 | Track and Field

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's and women's track and field teams compete at home in their final tune-up before the Big 12 Championships.

OU hosts the Sooner Indoor Open Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Mosier Indoor Track & Field Center.  Field events begin at 10 a.m.  Track events begin at 12 p.m.

Among the featured events of the meet will be a showdown between two of the NCAA's top sprinters.

Oklahoma's Ronnie Pines, ranked No. 1 in the Big 12, faces defending national champion Jacob Norman of Baylor in the 60-meter dash.  The meet will mark Norman's first competition of the season after spending the winter rehabbing after hip surgery.

The meet also pits two of the nation's top female triple jumpers as No. 8 Sandra Anane of New Mexico State and OU's Toni Smith, ranked 13th, square off against each other Saturday.

The Sooners head into the final weeks of the indoor season as one of the hottest teams in the Big 12.

OU's men are the conference's No. 1-ranked athletes in three events and have athletes in the top 10 in 16 of the 19 events that will be contested.  The OU women have athletes in the top 10 in 14 events.

Sooners also fare well nationally with six men ranked in the top 10 in their respective events.  In all, OU has one automatic qualifier for the NCAA National Indoor Track & Field Championships, pole vaulter Chip Heuser, and eight provisionally qualified entries.

Teams competing at the Sooner Open include Arkansas, Baylor, Dallas Baptist, Grambling, Missouri Southern, North Texas, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, SMU, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Tulsa and a plethora of regional colleges and universities.
