Lofton Grabs POY Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma linebacker Curtis Lofton picked up two Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors Wednesday. Both the Associated Press and the Kansas City Star have tabbed the junior as the league's best defender.
Lofton, who leads Oklahoma with 133 tackles, has had a remarkable season. He has the best tackle total in Bob Stoops' nine seasons in Norman and set a school record for most double-digit tackle games in one season with eight.
"He has had as productive a season as any linebacker we've had here," Stoops said.
That's lofty praise from the Sooner coach given the fact that he also coached Butkus Award winners Rocky Calmus and Teddy Lehman.
Lofton has twice been named the Big 12's Defensive Player of the Week and he has a pair of touchdowns on the season, a 45-yard interception return against Utah State and a 12-yard fumble return against Missouri.
He also forced crucial turnovers in OU's two rivalry games. Against both Texas and Oklahoma State he was credited with forced fumbles that the Sooners recovered, both inside their own five yard-line.
His tackle best of 18 came against Missouri.
Lofton and his teammates go after Oklahoma's fifth Big 12 title this Saturday when they meet Missouri at San Antonio. The game kicks off at 7 p.m., and will be televised by AB
