NORMAN, Okla. -- The white team capped off an exciting 8-7 win in the opener of the annual Red/White Series on Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Junior Doug Buser scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch by freshman Ryan Duke.  Prior to scoring the decisive run, Buser advanced to third on a hit and run with sophomore Zach Hedges at the plate.

Duke (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run and one hit during his relief appearance in the eighth and ninth innings.  Senior Jake McCarter (1-0) earned the win, keeping the score tied with his effort the final 1 1/3 innings of relief.

McCarter did not surrender a run or hit during his appearance and preserved a solid outing by starter Chase Anderson.  The sophomore struck out three and allowed two runs on nine hits during his five-inning outing.

"You have to tip your cap to the white team because they called a hit-and-run with a runner on first in the ninth and put themselves in a situation to win," said OU head coach Sunny Golloway.  "I wasn't disappointed with the way the game was won.  You can win a ball game a lot of ways and our young men need to understand that."

Junior catcher J.T. Wise put the red team ahead with a RBI double in the top of the first inning.  Wise's extra base hit plated junior Jamie Johnson, who led off the game with a single to left field.

The white team countered in the bottom half of the first on sophomore Zach Hedges' double, bringing home senior Aljay Davis.  Two batters later, sophomore Spencer Selby plated Hedges on a two-run homer to left field.

In the third inning, the white squad increased its lead and built a 6-1 advantage on RBI singles off the bats of junior Trey Sperring and senior Jarod Freeman.  Sophomore Bryan Groth brought home the sixth run of the frame on a bases-loaded walk by junior Stephen Porlier, who made just his second start of the fall season.  Porlier lasted three innings and gave up six runs on five hits.

Trailing 7-3 in the eighth, Wise tied the game at seven apiece for the red squad after he roped his second double of the day down the left-field line, plating two runs.  Earlier in the eighth, freshman Chad Colbert brought home senior Drew Roberts on a double to the gap in right center.

In the ninth, Duke loaded the bases with an intentional walk to junior Trey Sperring to bring up redshirt freshman Elliott Blair.  During the at-bat, Duke's pitch hit the dirt and got past Wise at the plate, allowing Buser to score the game winner.

Offensively, senior Jarod Freeman led the white team with three base hits, while Sperring and Selby each drove in two runs.Wise led the red with four RBI and freshman Garrett Buechele put together a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate.

The teams will resume action on Sunday at noon for game two of the series with sophomore Jeremy Erben (Red) vs. sophomore Andrew Doyle (White).

Game three is slated for a 2 p.m. start on Wednesday, Nov. 14 and game four and five will begin on Friday, Nov. 16 and Saturday Nov. 17, respectively at 1 p.m.  Every game of the Red/White Series is free and open to the public.
