Women's Golf Heads to Lubbock

NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 17 University of Oklahoma women's golf team is in action for the second week in a row as it heads to Lubbock, Texas, for the Jeannine McHaney/Audrey Morehead Invitational, hosted by Texas Tech University. Action begins Monday, Oct. 8 and finishes Tuesday, Oct. 9 at the 6,384-yard, par-72 Rawls Course.

"We are very ready for this tournament and have had great success there in the past," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "We will see some different teams, and our head-to-head will be very crucial since we fell a couple of spots after the Colorado tournament."

The Sooners are coming off a second place finish at the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational in Boulder, Colo., a week ago. Coupled with a victory in the season opener in Wisconsin, the Sooners have consecutive top-two finishes for the first time since 2003, when they won back-to-back tournaments.

"Coming in second made the team even hungrier, and I look for a great showing from the Sooners this week," Ludvigson said. "This will also serve as qualifying for our fifth roster spot going to New Mexico, so the four that are fighting for the fifth spot will use this tournament to prove themselves. We have good depth and that makes us even stronger."

The Sooners are currently ranked 17th by the Golfweek Magazine/Sagarin performance index ratings.

Junior Kendall Dye headlines a strong Sooner lineup this week that includes senior leaders Kelly Jacques and Heather Wright, true freshman Ellen Mueller and junior Staci Smoot.

Also traveling with the Sooners and competing as individuals are sophomores Joyce Trus, Chelsey Collins and Andrea Sellmeyer. Trus and Sellmeyer are making their debuts this season, while Collins is competing in her second fall tournament.

The Sooners finished four strokes behind the champion Colorado at the Heather Farr Memorial Invitational with a three-round score of 889 (+25).

Dye and Jacques finished tied for 11th with scores of 221 (+5), leading the team. Wright tied for 20th, Mueller tied for 24th, and Smoot tied for 49th to complete Oklahoma's second-place performance.

This is the third time in four years that the Sooners will be competing in the McHaney Invitational. A year ago they finished fourth, and came in second in 2004.

The Sooners tee it up on Monday at 8 a.m. CT for the first 36 holes. Tuesday's final-round also begins at 8 a.m. CT.
