NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's tennis team will play its final fall tournaments Friday, Nov. 2- 4 in San Diego, Calif., and in Columbus, Ohio. Oklahoma will take six to the San Diego State Invitational, while freshman Ana-Maria Constantinescu will represent the Sooners in Ohio.
Constantinescu, who has made an appearance in the finals of her first two collegiate tournaments, will travel to Columbus to compete in the individual National Indoor Championships, which begin Thursday. She received the bid after making it to the finals of the ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Oct. 21.
Constantinescu enters the tournament with an 8-3 collegiate showing. She looks to increase her record in Thursday's 32-player opening round when she faces Georgia Tech's Kirsten Flower.
"This is a great opportunity for Ana-Maria," said head coach Mark Johnson. "She will be one of few freshmen competing amongst the top 32 players. It is a good chance for her to make a name for herself early on in her career."
In San Diego, Oklahoma will be led by senior Chelsea Orr. The Tulsa, Okla., native has started off her senior campaign with a first-place finish at the Colorado Invitational and a 6-1 record on the fall season.
"This will be one of the better tournaments we will play in," said head coach Mark Johnson. "I think it will be good to compete against such great teams and will be the perfect end to our fall season."
With the strong showing throughout the fall, Oklahoma was offered a bid to the qualifying round of the ITA National Indoor tournament in Fayetteville, Ark. The Sooners dropped four tough matches to the Razorbacks in the event.
