Sooners in Second After First Round

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot an opening-round score of 300 on Monday to stand in a tie for second place with UC-Davis at the 16-team Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. Fellow Big 12 member Missouri holds the 18-hole lead at the 6,319-yard, par-72 New Mexico State University Golf Course after carding a 298 (+10).

"We played pretty good today, but our score really didn't reflect that," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "Our score was mediocre, but I feel that we will be ready to shoot a lower score tomorrow.  The team is ready to go. Putting and chipping was better, just a few mental mistakes caused us to have a couple of big scores."

Senior Kelly Jacques, who has finished no lower than 12th in OU's first three fall tournaments, overcame a rough start to fire a 1-over 73 and is in a tie for seventh place.

"I am very proud of Kelly," Ludvigson said.  "She started out with a triple bogey and worked her way back to one over for the day."

Jacques trails individual leader Michelle Morgan of Missouri by four strokes and sits just a shot out of a four-way tie for third.  She is three strokes behind second-place Bryana Gregory of UC-Davis.

OU junior Kendall Dye carded a 3-over 75 and sits in a tie for 16th place through 18 holes. Freshman Ellen Mueller and senior Heather Wright continued their solid fall play and are tied for 25th after each shot a 76 (+4). Sophomore Chelsey Collins stands tied for 46th after recording a 78 (+6).

Oklahoma and UC-Davis are two strokes clear of a three-way tie for fourth between Kansas, Michigan and Idaho, and three ahead of seventh-place North Carolina State.

"Our goal tomorrow is to shoot 295 or better," Ludvigson said. "Everyone can shave off around two shots, and if that happens we will be ready to rock and roll. A good day for the Sooners is coming."

The second round begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. MDT. Wednesday's final round will also begin at 8 a.m. MDT.

The Price's "Give 'Em Five" Intercollegiate is OU's final 2007 fall tournament.  The Sooners finished first, second and fourth in their first three events.
