NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team looks to finish strong as it completes its fall season Oct. 15-17 at the 16-team Price's "Give `Em Five" Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Play begins Monday at the 6,319-yard, par-72 New Mexico State University Golf Course.
"We are very excited to go to this tournament because we know we are very close to playing great golf," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "The team is hungry and ready to finish the fall semester with a win. We are tough and getting even tougher every time we play."
The Sooners, ranked 35th by the Golfweek Magazine/Sagarin performance index ratings, have three top-four finishes in three fall tournaments and look to make it a perfect four-for-four this week.
"We need to play better around the greens and really capitalize on our short games," Ludvigson said. "This golf course calls for very good putting and chipping. The most important thing in this tournament is to pay attention to the grain of the green. The field will be strong and it would be a very good win for us."
Holding the No. 1 spot in the Sooner lineup for the tournament will be senior Kelly Jacques. Jacques, a four-year letterwinner for the Sooners, will be playing in her 98th, 99th, and 100th rounds as a Sooner.
Ellen Mueller, a true freshman who holds a 75.38 season stroke average and two top-15 finishes in three events, follows Jacques in the Sooner lineup.
Sophomore Chelsey Collins, senior Heather Wright and junior Kendall Dye complete the Oklahoma lineup.
"I look forward to Heather and Kendall doing better this trip," Ludvigson said. "They struggled last time and it really shows in our team scores when our veterans struggle. They feel more confident and ready to put a low score on the board this week. Our goal is to have a team win and individuals in the top 10 after all is said and done."
The Sooners match up with 15 other teams this week, including three from the Big 12 (Baylor, Kansas and Missouri). Joining the four Big 12 schools in the field will be UC-Davis, Gonzaga, Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico State, North Carolina State, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Samford, South Alabama, UTEP and Texas State.
One round will be played each day, Monday through Wednesday, with play beginning at 8 a.m. MDT.
