NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team took a break from workouts last week to have a little fun with the students at Norman's Cleveland Elementary School. OU gymnasts and coaches participated in the school's annual Family Fun Night on Sept. 27 and the Jog-A-Thon fundraiser event on Sept. 28.
The main event at Family Fun Night saw the Sooners take turns in the ever-popular dunk tank. A large crowd of students gathered to watch their classmates try to soak their favorite gymnasts.
On Friday morning the coaches and gymnasts returned to Cleveland to run with students in the Jog-A-Thon.
The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team has a long partnership with Cleveland Elementary. Head coach Mark Williams, a former English teacher, and Cleveland music teacher Regina Bell created a "Partners in Education" program which allows the OU gymnasts to make weekly visits to the school.
The student-athletes help teachers with day-to-day activities such as reading, grammar skills and math exercises. They also get to spend time talking with students about what it's like to be an OU student-athlete.
The gymnastics team also hosts an annual Cleveland Elementary Night at one of its home meets where students and their parents can come get an up close look at their favorite gymnasts in action.
