NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 16 University of Oklahoma women's golf team sits in a tie for first place with Colorado going into the final round of the University of Colorado Heather Farr Memorial Invitational after shooting rounds of 289 and 299 on Monday. OU's first-round score of 289 tied for the second-best round in school history, two strokes off the school record.
"We played really well in the morning, getting good rounds from Kelly (Jacques) and Heather (Wright)," OU head coach Carol Ludvigson said. "This afternoon we lost a few shots around the green, we had a lot of putts. But overall, I think the girls are ready to go for tomorrow."
Returning to her home state, Kelly Jacques led the way for the Sooners on day one. The senior from Longmont, Colo., tied a career best with a first-round score of 71 (-1) and added a 75 (+3) in the second round to place her in a tie for ninth. Jacques is five shots off the pace set by Dominique Pytlewski of Colorado at 3-under (141).
Fellow senior Heather Wright fired a career-best 70 (-2) in the first round and followed with a 78 (+6) in the second, good for a tie for 13th.
True freshman Ellen Mueller, one of OU's highlights of the young season, continued her consistent play with a two-round total of 148 (+4) and joined Wright in a tie for 13th. Junior Kendall Dye also carded a 148 to give the Sooners four players in the top 13.
Junior Staci Smoot rounded out the successful first day for the Sooners with a two-round score of 154 (+11) to stand in a tie for 53rd.
"We feel really good about how everybody is striking the ball, and everybody is doing well mentally as far as staying committed to their game plan," Ludvigson said. "Hopefully we can go out tomorrow and shoot another round under 290, which I think is what it's going to take to win the tournament."
The Sooners and Buffaloes, with two-round totals of 588 (+12), lead third place Idaho (590) by two shots and fourth place Colorado State (592) by four. UC Davis and Hawaii (596) trail the leaders by eight strokes in a tie for fifth.
Final round play at the 6,211-yard, par-72 Omni Interlocken Golf Course begins Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. CT.
