NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma baseball team was picked fifth in the Big 12 Conference Coaches' preseason poll as released by the league office on Monday. OU, who was recently tabbed No. 27 nationally by the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' poll, received 46 points in the Big 12 poll, 11 points shy of fourth place Baylor.
The poll was based on a vote by each of the 10 conference head coaches, who were not allowed to cast a vote for their own team in the process. Nine points were awarded for first-place votes, eight for second, seven for third and so on.
The Sooners were also picked to finish fifth last season and ended the regular season in third place and was the last conference team standing in the NCAA Tournament, coming up one win shy of the College World Series. The last time OU was picked higher than fifth prior to a season was in 2003 when the Sooners were tabbed third.

“It is very hard to predict the way teams will finish before even playing a game, especially within the Big 12 -- one of the toughest conferences in the country,” said OU head coach Sunny Golloway. “The Big 12 will once again be strong this year and I think several teams are going to compete for the top spot in our conference. I believe our club will be one of them and we are looking forward to starting the season this weekend.”
Texas once again topped the list for the fifth straight year with 79 points, including seven first-place votes. Oklahoma State (70) followed the Longhorns at No. 2 with two first-place votes and Texas A&M, picked seventh, was the only other school to receive a first-place vote.
Nebraska (64) and Baylor (57) rounded out the top four. Following the Sooners was Texas Tech (37), Texas A&M (34), Missouri (29), Kansas (22) and Kansas State (12).
OU ended last season with a 45-22 overall record (17-10 in Big 12), a regional championship and the program's first appearance in an NCAA Super Regional.
Among some of the key players returning in 2007 are juniors Ryan Mottern (RHP), Aaron Reza (SS) and Jackson Williams (catcher).
The Sooners open the 2007 season at the Texas-Pan American Tournament in Edinburg, Texas, against Texas State on Feb. 2. The opener is the first of three games over the weekend. OU will also battle the host Broncs on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
Oklahoma's season opener is slated for Friday, Feb. 23 in the first of three games against Western Illinois that weekend. the series against the Leathernecks is the start of a nine-game homestand which also features games against Wichita State (Feb. 27), UC Riverside (March 2-4) and Creighton (March 6-7).
