NORMAN, Okla. For the second consecutive week, Oklahoma's Brittney Koncak-Schumann has been named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week. The honor is the sixth of her career.
A senior from McQueeney, Texas, Koncak-Schumann led the eighth-ranked Sooners to a victory over Central Michigan and No. 22 Missouri in their home opener at the McCasland Field House on Jan. 19.
"Brittney has been a model for consistency this season," OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. "She shows passion for the sport every day and it is obvious on the competitive floor. She is a team player, and with each individual accolade she receives, it reflects positively on her teammates and the support they show each other day in and day out."
The 2006 Big 12 all-around champion won the all-around (39.325), uneven bars (9.875) and balance beam (9.95) titles last weekend in the win over the Chippewas and Tigers. Her balance beam score was a career-high. She also finished fourth on vault (9.85).
Koncak-Schumann won three Big 12 weekly honors in 2006, and she is the first to win back-to-back honors this season. Nebraska's Emily Parsons and Iowa State's Janet Anson took home consecutive honors last season.
