Alexander 90th Senior Bowl Sooner

Alexander 90th Senior Bowl Sooner

January 22, 2007 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- OU linebacker Rufus Alexander joined top seniors from across the country on Sunday in Mobile, Ala.

Alexander was invited to display his talents for the NFL scouts during this week's practices leading up to the 2007 Senior Bowl.

The event annually features the country's best senior collegiate football players and top NFL draft prospects on teams representing the North and South that are coached by the entire coaching staffs of two National Football League teams.

The staff of the San Francisco 49ers will coach the South with the staff of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers directing the North squad.

Alexander helped Oklahoma earn its 40th conference title with a Big 12 championship and an 11-3 overall record in 2006. He was named OU's 142nd All-American in December.

The Baton Rouge, La., native led the Sooner defense with 118 tackles (75 solo) including 12 for loss (-43 yards). Alexander was also credited with 3.5 quarterback sacks, four forced fumbles (two recoveries) and an interception.

Alexander had 36 starts in his career including every game of the 2006 and 2005 seasons. He played in 39 total games for the Sooners from 2003-06 after redshirting in 2002.

The 2006 Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year, Alexander became the first OU player to lead the team in tackles in back to back seasons since Rocky Calmus did so in three consecutive seasons from 1999-2001.

Alexander will wear his crimson OU helmet with a No. 33 South jersey. Alexander is the 90th OU player invited to play in the Senior Bowl since the game began in 1950 and the 18th Sooner selected during the Bob Stoops era.

Not surprisingly, Alabama (197 players) and Auburn (175) have the most appearances all-time in the Senior Bowl. Outside the state of Alabama, Oklahoma (90) trails only Tennessee (176), Penn State (100) and LSU (91) in players sent to the all-star game.

In the Big 12, Oklahoma leads Nebraska (81 players), Texas A&M (55), Colorado (55), Missouri (51), Texas (51), Baylor (40), Kansas State (37), Oklahoma State (33), Kansas (31), Iowa State (22) and Texas Tech (16).

Other star linebackers for the South invited to Mobile include Florida State's Buster Davis, Earl Everett (Florida), Juwan Simpson (Alabama) and Tony Taylor (Georgia).

North linebackers are H.B. Blades (Pitt), Stewart Bradley (Nebraska), Prescott Burgess (Michigan), David Harris (Michigan), Boo McLee (West Virginia) and Paul Posluszny (Penn State).

The 2007 Under Armour Senior Bowl will be played at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama.

The NFL Network is broadcasting practices from Mobile during the week and will show the game on Saturday.
