Volleyball Extends Streak to Five

DENTON, Texas - Senior Joanna Schmitt recorded another double-double and the Oklahoma volleyball team extended its winning streak with its fifth straight sweep, a 3-0 route of North Texas (5-6) in the Mean Green Classic Friday evening in Denton, Texas.

OU's defense held the Mean Green to a .098 hitting percentage as the Sooners recorded a three-game win by scores of 30-25, 30-22 and 30-21.

“I thought we weathered the storm tonight,” head coach Santiago Restrepo said. “We didn't come out playing our best in the first game, but the scores will show that we improved every game and that is what I like to see. We served much better in the second and third games tonight.”

Schmitt continued to stay hot in the non-conference part of the season as she tallied her fifth double-double of the season with a 14-kill, 11-dig performance. The outside hitter is leading the team with a 4.38 kill per game average.

Offensively, the Sooners posted a .264 clip behind setter Rachel Jackson's 45 assists and middle blocker Eliane Santos' impressive .600 hitting percentage with match-high 16 kills.

Adding to the offensive attack was senior Laura Tomes who added eight kills against the Mean Green.

“I was proud of our girls for engaging tonight,” Restrepo said. “I really challenged them before the match to come out strong and aggressive and they did a nice job of that.

Libero Anna Monsen highlighted the back row with her team-high 15 digs against North Texas while freshman Bridget Laplante continues to impress as she collected nine digs for the Sooners.

Tomes continued her stellar play at the net as she recorded six block assists at the net while junior Sarah Weiland added four to the team's total of seven.

Oklahoma will wrap up its final tournament of the regular season on Saturday as it takes on Texas Southern at 11 a.m. in Denton.
