NORMAN, Okla. -- For the third consecutive week an Oklahoma player has claimed one of the Big 12 Conference's weekly awards.
This time it's punt returner Reggie Smith, who had a 61-yard touchdown return against Middle Tennessee during OU's 59-0 win, Saturday. In the previous two weeks, Sooner running back Adrian Peterson won the offensive player honor.
Smith currently ranks No. 10 nationally with 15.9 yards per return. The 61-yard return was his first for a touchdown, but not his longest of the season. He had a 62-yard return against Washington in game two.
Smith average per punt return is magnified by the fact that he has 13 attempts. No other player in the NCAA top 25 has more than 10 thus far.
The sophomore from Edmond also has been a strong kick returner for OU. His four attempts have gone for 110 yards, an average of 27.5 yards per return. The national leader, Chris Garrett of Ohio, has only six.
Smith started the first three games of the season at cornerback, before moving to safety for last Saturday's game vs. Middle Tennessee. For the season, he has 15 tackles, one for loss and two pass deflections.
The other Big 12 honorees for this week were Nebraska's Marlon Lucky (offense) and Texas' Tim Crowder on defense.
