After another narrow win against Fresno State, the Ducks (2-0) return home next week with a showdown against No. 15 Oklahoma. They'll feel lucky to survive this one, which was a typically tight battle all night. Oregon in the News
Oregon has lost to the Sooners twice in the last two seasons, including a 17-14 defeat in last season's Holiday Bowl -- a game the Ducks have not forgotten. "It hurts the heart a little bit," Oregon wide receiver Jaison Williams said. "So we're going to go in with a chip on our shoulder and see what that does for us."

Because they got a taste of their own medicine, the Ducks did Saturday night. In a stadium inspired by Autzen Stadium, they found out what it's like to be the visiting team in a place that's so loud the noise is overwhelming, a mixture of the "thunder sticks," the noisemakers that Oregon featured until the Pac-10 outlawed them, and more than that, the raw emotion of fiercely proud fans who wanted this one dearly.

Among the many alarming sights for Oregon were running back Jonathan Stewart, standing on the sideline, resting his injured ankle for Oklahoma. And the two dumb third-quarter personal fouls committed by the Ducks. And too many false starts for a team that claims to pipe in noise when preparing for a night trapped in a gridiron grotto with 42,291 hostile fans.

Playing in a very physical game, two Oregon starters, wide receiver Garren Strong and cornerback Jackie Bates went down with injuries and did not return. Strong, who went down in the first quarter after he was tackled awkwardly, has a lower leg strain and is probable for Saturday's game against Oklahoma.

With Saturday's victory, coach Mike Bellotti became the winningest coach in school history, passing Rich Brooks. Bellotti is 92-42 at Oregon. "It's still a work in progress," Bellotti said this week on the milestone that comes in his 12th season. "Now that it's here, it's sort of snuck up on me."

With the game tied at 24-24 in the fourth quarter following a Fresno State touchdown, Oregon's center and quarterback huddled on the sideline. They had less than 11 minutes to get the Ducks back into the lead. The conversation was brief, but their resolve was strengthened.

Oregon coach Mike Bellotti announced Sunday night that junior cornerback Jackie Bates could be lost for the season with a broken leg. Bates injured his leg breaking up a pass in the third quarter on Saturday. Bates said after the game that he would be OK. But x-rays revealed a break.
