NORMAN, Okla. -- As part of continuing coverage of Oklahoma baseball throughout the summer, SoonerSports.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Sooners competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country, including former Sooners playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.
Update No. 7
As the Texas Collegiate League season winds down and playoffs begin, Joseph Hughes picked the right time to play his best ball of the season. The McKinney, Texas product was named the TCL Player of the Week after hitting .542 for the Coppell Copperheads. In 24 at bats, the Copperhead outfielder/pitcher had 13 hits, seven runs, five doubles, two RBI, two stolen bases and a walk.
Hughes and fellow Coppell Copperhead Jimmy Rollins are the only Sooners still in the playoff hunt, but must win back-to-back games against the McKinney Marshals to advance to the championship. Coppell, the No. 1 seed in the Tris Speaker Division, lost 10-1 to the Marshals in the first of a three game series Tuesday night. Game two is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. in McKinney, with the “if necessary” game slated for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. back in Coppell.
Rollins has one save in five appearances for Coppell with a 4.20 ERA.
The Sooners finished on a strong note in the TCL, garnering player of the week honors three out of the final four weeks. Sophomore Brandon Moss was named player of the week on July 13 after posting a .421 batting average with eight hits, five runs, six RBI and a walk with the Euless LoneStars. The following week Graham Roughneck Jarod Freeman continued the Sooner streak by hitting .462 with 12 hits, seven doubles, five runs, one homerun, eight RBI and two walks.

Staying in the MLB, two former Sooners made the highlight reels Sunday night in grand fashion. Jason Bartlett went 5-for-5 against the Royals, upping his average to .364 on the year for the Minnesota Twins. Greg Norton provided a walk-off home run against the Red Sox and is hitting .371 in his last 10 games with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
