Freshman RB DeMarco Murray

Freshman RB DeMarco Murray

August 30, 2006 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- The road to Oklahoma statehood began on the run in 1889. Is it any wonder that the Sooners and their fans love to run the football?

Undoubtedly, running back at the University of Oklahoma is one of the glamour positions in college football.

The pantheon of Sooner greats evoke memories of Heisman Trophies, silver shoes and whisps of smoke: Billy Sims, Joe Washington, Quentin Griffin, Lydell Carr, Mike Gaddis, De'Mond Parker, Steve Owens, Greg Pruitt, Stanley Wilson and current star, Adrian Peterson.

Perhaps freshman running back DeMarco Murray will add his name to the list in the near future.

As a senior at Bishop Gorman Academy in Las Vegas, Murray rushed for 1,947 yards and 27 touchdowns while catching 22 passes for 624 yards and 7 more TDs.

His athletic prowess extended from the gridiron to the basketball court where he led Bishop Gorman to a 2005 state championship.

ESPN.com named Murray the No. 1 running back in the nation prior to signing day in February.

SoonerSports.com continues its series on the Oklahoma newcomers with this feature on No. 3, DeMarco Murray.
