Sooners Select Captains for 2006

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma football team selected its captains for the 2006 season.

Quarterback Paul Thompson, offensive tackle Chris Messner, linebacker Rufus Alexander and defensive end C.J. Ah You were recognized by head coach Bob Stoops at the Big Red Rally at Owen Field Thursday evening. All four players are seniors.

Thompson, Alexander and Ah You spoke briefly to the crowd. Messner left the event earlier to attend an evening class.

The Big Red Rally is the annual kickoff event for Oklahoma students held at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

The crowd watched a portion of the football team's scrimmage before listening to remarks from OU President David Boren.

After performances by the spirit squads and the Pride of Oklahoma, fans were treated to a sneak peek of the new 2006 intro video which will welcome the team to Owen Field just before kickoff at the UAB game.

The Sooners host the Blazers on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. The game will be televised by TBS.
