NORMAN, Okla. -- A crowd estimated at more than 12,000 looked at Saturday night as Oklahoma completed its first major scrimmage of the 2006 preseason.
OU head coach Bob Stoops said he was pleased with his team's direction after the 75-play workout.
The Sooners' quick defense controlled much of the evening as several of the team's offensive standouts were used sparingly.
Adrian Peterson logged just one run, while Malcolm Kelly, the squad's top receive last season, missed the practice while serving as the best man in his brother's wedding.
Still, the offense had its moments. True freshman running back Mossis Madu scored on a one-yard run capping a seven-play 40-yard drive.
Another true freshman back, Chris Brown, scored from two yards out on the final play of a five-play, 50-yard march.
"I was very pleased," Stoops said. "There was a lot of clean play. Paul (Thompson) managed the huddle well and had good snap control all day. He still has some brushing up to do, but he really got in a rhythm as we went along.
Thompson hit on 15-of-26 passes for 133 yards with two touchdowns, both in red-zone work, and one interception. The senior completed 11 of his last 13 attempts.
Cornerback Lendy Holmes paced the defense with a pair of interceptions. The top tackler was linebacker Demarrio Pleasant with seven.
Stoops also complimented the special teams play.
"I was really pleased with the kicking game," he said. "The punters were all good team and their operation time was excellent."
All three of the players vying for that job -- Michael Cohen, Garrett Hartley and Mike Knall averaged at least 41 yards on six punts.
Hartley made his first nine field goals and finished 10-of-12. His misses came from 47 and 49 yards.
The Sooners are off on Sunday, but return to the practice with two workouts on Monday.
