White Rallies Past Red in Game One

Baseball Summer League Update No. 6

August 01, 2006 | Baseball

NORMAN, Okla. -- As part of continuing coverage of Oklahoma baseball throughout the summer, SoonerSports.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Sooners competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country, including former Sooners playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.

Update No. 6
A July 31st matchup between the Hyannis Mets and Orleans Cardinals found Sooners on both squads as Joe Dunigan and Kody Kaiser of the Cards' cruised to an 8-1 victory over Jackson Williams and the Mets.  A Williams first inning single down the right field line gave Hyannis its only run of the game, but the Cards came right back with three in the first and two in both the second and third frames and never looked back. Dunigan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Kaiser provided a run in the third where he singled, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.  The Edmond native leads the Cape Cod League in stolen bases with 17.

Losing the July 25th matchup with the Brewster Whitecaps 5-2, the Cards' still find themselves one slot out of a playoff berth with only four games remaining.

In the Texas Collegiate League, Jarod Freeman and the Graham Roughnecks jumped out of the gate with a 10-run first inning to easily defeat the visiting Weatherford Wranglers 17-2 on July 29th. The Westmoore product went 4-for-5 while scoring three runs, adding three RBIs and connecting for two doubles to extend his league lead to 14. It was a must win game for the Roughnecks as they continue their pursuit for second place in the Hornsby Division.

Other Sooners playing in the Texas Collegiate League are seniors Joseph Hughes (Coppell Copperheads), Matt Lovelady (Weatherford Wranglers) and Jimmy Rollins (Coppell Copperheads), junior Brad Burns (Weatherford Wranglers) and sophomores Nich Conaway (Weatherford Wranglers) and Brandon Moss (Euless Stars).

Senior outfielder Aaron Ivey finished up the season with the Kauai Menehunes over the weekend with a second place finish in the Hawaii Collegiate League tournament. The Menehunes went into the final day of play needing to take one of two against the Waikiki Surfers for the tournament crown but ran out of pitching, resulting in the back-to-back losses. The Putnam City North product went 2-for-5 in the first championship game with three stolen bases.

Ryan Mottern and the Peninsula Oilers were crowned Alaska Baseball League Champions over the weekend and will move on to the 2006 National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan. The Palestine, Texas, native paced the team with a 0.50 ERA in nine appearances. Mottern showcased control throughout the season in striking out 34 while allowing only 11 walks and two earned runs. The Oilers will face the Crestwood (Ill.) Panthers on August 2 in the first round of the NBC World Series.

In California, Chris Henry, Joel Pedretti and the Salinas Valley Packers closed out their season with a 7-0 victory over the Maxim Yankees. The Packers finished the regular season with a 35-26 overall record (20-16 in California Collegiate League). Henry finished the summer with a 4-2 record in nine appearances with a 3.35 ERA, while Pedretti batted .189 in 23 games.

In the minor league ranks, former Sooner Daniel McCutchen picked up his first decision of the year in an 8-4 victory over the West Virginia Power on July 26th. The Norman native pitched three strong innings, striking out three while allowing only two hits in the victory.
