NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma women's basketball standouts Ashley and Courtney Paris are among 17 finalists that will compete for 12 roster spots during the USA U20 World Championship Team Trials from July 28-Aug. 5.
All of the players will be competing for the right to represent the USA in the FIBA Americas U20 Championship for Women Aug. 8-12 in Mexico City, Mexico.
The USA U20 National Team will train July 28-Aug. 5 in Costa Mesa, Calif., at the University of California, Irvine and Concordia University. The 17 finalists were selected by the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee, which is chaired by Sue Donohoe, the NCAA's vice president of Division I women's basketball.
“The 17 finalists we have returning are all exceptional athletes,” 2006 USA Basketball Women's U20 National Team and Michigan State University head coach Joanne P. McCallie said. “Now what we are looking to do is to get that focusespecially that defensive focus. Ultimately our goal is to win a gold medal, but within that, we should also be challenging each other to be the very best we can as individuals and a team while representing our country.”

If Courtney makes the squad, she will be pursuing her fourth gold medal. She has earned gold with the 2005 USA U19 World Championship Team, the 2004 USA Junior World Championship Qualifying Team and the 2004 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival West Team.
Last summer with the under-19 squad, Paris averaged 12.1 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds during 12 games. Courtney was one of a few players on that team that had no college experience. This year North Carolina's Erlana Larkins and the Sooner center are the veterans of the group.
For Ashley, it marks her second summer of involvement with the USA Basketball program She also was a finalist for the 2004 USA Junior National Team and gold medalist on the same 2004 USA Basketball Youth Development Festival West Team as her sister.
The USA looks to defend its title at the 2006 FIBA Americas U20 Championship, and the official 12-member USA U20 National Team will be announced prior to departing for the event. The announcement could come as early as Tuesday, Aug. 1. Featuring eight teams from North, South and Central Americas and the Caribbean, the top three finishing teams at the tournament qualify for the 2007 FIBA U21 Women's World Championship in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
