Horton Named to U.S. Team for Tri-Meet

NORMAN, Okla. University of Oklahoma gymnast Jonathan Horton has been named to the U.S. Team that will compete in the USA-France-Switzerland Tri-Meet in Paris, France, on June 24. 

 

Horton was named to the U.S. men's senior national team following a second-place finish in the all-around competition at the 2006 Winter Cup in February.

 

In his most recent international competition, the Houston, Texas, native won the all-around title at the 2006 Tyson American Cup with a score of 92.5.

 

At the 2006 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships in Norman, Horton helped lead the Sooners to an undefeated season and their second consecutive NCAA championship.  He set career-highs on both the parallel bars (9.525) and high bar (9.8) and tied a career-high on the vault (9.5) on his way to the all-around title.

 

Horton also claimed individual titles in the floor exercise (9.575) and the still rings (9.637) and was an All-American on the high bar and parallel bars.

Joining Horton on the U.S. Team are Guillermo Alvarez of Denver, Alex Artemev of Morrison, Colo., David Durante of Garwood, N.J., David Sender of Chicago and Kevin Tan of Fremont, Calif.  All six are members of the men's senior national team.

 

Horton, Alvarez and Durante competed on the squad that won the team gold medal at the 2005 Pan Am Championships. 

 

The format for the tri-meet has five men competing on each apparatus, with four scores counting toward the team total.  Each team will be allowed to choose which five gymnasts compete in each event.
