NORMAN, Okla. -- Sooner fans will be hard-pressed to pick a favorite NFL team to watch this fall. With all the talent sent to the professional league by OU the past few years, former favorites in crimson and cream will be all over the field on Sundays.
Since head coach Bob Stoops arrived in Norman in 1999, the Oklahoma program has supplied 52 players to the NFL. 29 Sooners have been drafted while 23 have signed free agent contracts.
The league currently lists 36 Sooners on active rosters including six OU players selected in the 2006 draft and four free agent signings: Remi Ayodele (New England), Eric Bassey (Buffalo), Kelvin Chaisson (Houston) and Chijioke Onyenegecha (Washington).
Tampa Bay scooped up offensive lineman Davin Joseph in the first round this year, the first Sooner taken by the Bucs in the opening round since legendary defensive end
Lee Roy Selmon. After one of the greatest careers in college football history, Selmon was the first player taken in the 1976 draft. Following a nine-year career with the Bucs, the Eufaula, Okla., native was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1995.
Davin Joseph continued an impressive trend for Oklahoma. A Sooner has been selected in the first round of the past five drafts and six of Stoops' seven seasons in Norman.
