Sooners in Sixth at Susie Maxwell

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a second-round 299 (+11) in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic on Sunday in Norman and is in sixth place. The Sooners were in seventh place following their morning round of 306 (+18).

OU trails leader Oklahoma State by 38 strokes. The Cowgirls shot a 283 in the first round, just one stroke shy of the single-round tournament record, and a 284 in the second.

Kansas State's Michelle Regan tied a single-round tournament record with her second-round 67 (-5). Tulsa's Nancy Lopez fired a 67 in the 1976 event.

Heather Wright leads the Sooners after firing a season-low 72 (E) in round two for a total score of 146 (+2). The sophomore is tied for ninth place and has now led the team in each of the last five rounds. Wright was one of five golfers to record a tournament-high eight birdies on the day.

“We are disappointed in our team score but we are really optimistic about Heather and how well she played and how consistent she was,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson.

True freshman Kendall Dye and sophomore Kelly Jacques are tied for 33rd place with two-round totals of 152 (+8). Dye carded rounds of 75 (+3) and 77 (+5), while Jacques posted rounds of 77 (+5) and 75 (+3).

Redshirt freshman Sydney Lee, who is competing in her first collegiate tournament, is tied for 37th place with a total 153 (+9) after shooting a second-round 75 (+3).

With total scores of 155 (+11), Amparo Gala and Staci Smoot are tied for 48th place. Gala, the only senior on the squad, recorded rounds of 80 (+8) and 75 (+3). Smoot, a redshirt freshman who is competing as an individual, posted a first-round 76 (+4) and second-round 79 (+7).

Junior Megan Goodwin, Oklahoma's third individual, registered a second-round 82 (+10) for a two-round total of 158 (+14) and a tie for 60th place. Junior Jaclyn Stelzer shot a 162 (+18) with rounds of 84 (+12) and 78 (+6) and is in 78th place.

Junior Charli Bullard finished the day tied for 83rd. The junior recorded one of two second-round eagles by chipping in from 30 yards on the par-five 17th. North Texas' Jaclyn Golden also carded a three on the 17th. Bullard's second-round 78 (+6) was eight strokes better than her first round.

When asked about the strong performance of OU's individual competitors Ludvigson said, “I think it really shows the depth of our team that even our ninth player is shooting in the 70's. It is a real positive.”

The final round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic will begin at 8 a.m. Monday.

“We were aggressive in our shots and too aggressive in our putts,” said Ludvigson. “We learned a lot today about trusting ourselves. I think we just need to relax, not put a lot of pressure on ourselves and work on our greens.

“We have a young team and they just got in their own way today. We talked about that in between rounds and really worked on that. Tomorrow we are looking to shoot low.”
