Red-White Gamed Recap
Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops devised a scoring system that would also provide the defense scoring opportunities. And the defense took advantage.

The Sooner defense out-pointed its offensive counterpart 41-30 in the annual Red/White Spring Game presented by Diffee Ford at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. A crowd of 25,000 and a national cable audience courtesy of ESPN looked on as OU rambled towards the close of its spring practices.

Spring drills will conclude next week with practices scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The defense picked up most of its points by forcing punts and creating turnovers. It also got a conventional score when cornerback Lendy Holmes scooped up a fumble and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown late in the game.

“I liked (the scrimmage),” Stoops said. “I was pleased. Up until late, we handled the ball in a good way and the offensive line held together.

“The defense had very good structure and discipline. They understand what they need to do.”

Oklahoma's defense picked off four passes. Reggie Smith got one of those, which he returned 20 yards. He also broke up three passes and logged four tackles.

“Our secondary and linebackers showed very good recognition. We have a chance to be really good there, Stoops said.”

The offense was hamstrung by a couple things. First, one of its most potent weapons, Adrian Peterson, was ruled off-limits for contact.  He wore a red jersey with blue numbers to remind defenders to pull up. Even so, the junior-to-be running back caught three passes for 31 yards.

Rhett Bomar completed 11 of his 22 passing attempts for 173 yards with one touchdown and one interception. His TD throw was a 43-yarder to wide receiver Juaquin Iglesias.

The second problem came in the form of recognition.

“Our offense is at a disadvantage in these situations because the defense sees them every day and recognizes things before they happen.”

Still, the Sooner coach saw signs of improvement, especially in an offensive line that is both young and thin, the latter of which due to the fact that several regulars are recovering from off-season surgeries.

“I feel like we're making good improvement up there,” Stoops said. “The good thing is that those guys are out there everyday. They're getting a ton of snaps and that will make them better.”

Oklahoma will conclude its spring practices this week and will hold a 45-play scrimmage Thursday.
