NORMAN, Okla. -- Chris Chester became the second Oklahoma player selected in the 2006 NFL Draft when the Baltimore Ravens drafted him in the second round as the No. 56 pick overall.
Chester, a center, became the second OU player to be drafted on the first day after Davin Joseph was the first-round choice by the Tampa Bay Bucaneers. Chester is the fourth Sooner offensive lineman to be drafted in the last two years.
He became the 28th player drafted in Bob Stoops' seven seasons as the Oklahoma coach.
Baltimore continued a recent trend of drafting Oklahoma players. The Ravens have taken four in the last four years including WR Mark Clayton and DE Dan Cody last season and TE Trent Smith in 2003.
Chester ascended the draft evaluations when he tested strongly at the NFL Combine. He played tight end over his first three seasons with the Sooners, primarily in jumbo sets as a blocker. He had two career receptions, the most notable of which came in the 2002 season when he hauled in a touchdown catch on a faked field goal at Missouri.
Considered the most versatile of OU's offensive linemen, he played and started eight games, five at center and three at left guard. He was on the field for every snap of OU's 17-14 Holiday Bowl win over No. 6-ranked Oregon.
