NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team, fresh off its fourth national title in five years, will be honored Friday morning by the students and staff of Cleveland Elementary school in Norman. The team will be honored not only for its athletic accomplishments, but for its community service accomplishments as well.
Cleveland Elementary program coordinator Regina Bell will present OU head coach Mark Williams and the 2006 team with their official Partners in Education certificate, honoring the team for a year of volunteering with the school. Gymnasts were assigned to assist a specific teacher with day-to-day activities, which included reading, practicing grammar skills and math exercises.
In September the team participated in Cleveland's only fund raising effort of the year, the Survivor Jog-a-Thon. Williams and the gymnasts wore the race's t-shirts and participated in a multitude of events to help raise money for the school's music and physical education departments.
The Cleveland students and staff showed their support for the Sooner team throughout the season including a Cleveland night at Oklahoma's win over Michigan on Jan. 27.
