NORMAN, Okla. -- "A magical ride," came to an end on Monday evening as the Oklahoma women's basketball team closed out the 2005-06 season with its annual postseason banquet at the Postal Service Center.
The Sooners and some 500 fans in attendance celebrated the lengthy list of accomplishments from the most recent season and passed out some new hardware as well.
Emcee Clarke Stroud began the evening with some comic relief before passing the microphone off to Dr. Gerald Gurnery, Associate Athletics Director for Academic Affairs.
"I have worked in athletics for 27 years and at OU for 13 years, but I have never been drawn to the sport of basketball on any level," said Gurney. "Yet this season, thanks to work of Coach Coale and her team of student-athletes, I can finally say I am officially a fan of women's basketball."
Gurney went on to praise the Sooner team for 19 consecutive semesters of at least a combined GPA of 3.0.
Dr. Bill Pink, Women's Basketball Director of Operations, stepped to the stage next and highlighted the community services activities of the program.
"These students given up hours of their life every week for a variety of volunteer causes," said Pink. "The best part is that it is not a one time thing, it will continue year after year."
It was finally head coach Sherri Coale's turn and she quickly coined, "the magical ride," and spoke in depth about the numerous rewards claimed and enjoyed by the OU program this season. She also spoke at length about each of her 11 players, including the announcement that walk-on Carolyn Winchester will receive a full scholarship next season.
After a 25-minute highlight video, the OU assistant coaches and Stroud, handed out the team's postseason awards.
