Five Golfers Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

NORMAN, Okla. The Big 12 Conference has named a conference-leading five members of the Oklahoma women's golf team to the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Golf Team. Lone senior Amparo Gala, junior Megan Goodwin, sophomore Kelly Jacques, redshirt freshman Staci Smoot and junior Jaclyn Stelzer help make up the 35-member first-team.

Oklahoma tied with Nebraska and Texas A&M for a league-leading five student-athletes named to the squad.

This marks the third consecutive year for Gala, a biochemistry senior, to receive the honor. Gala and Goodwin, who is a marketing junior, are two of five golfers to be nominated with a 4.00 grade point average. Stelzer, who is majoring in communications, received the same honor last season. Smoot is a business-undecided major and Jacques is a pre-health and exercise sciences major, both are first-time honorees.

“I'm very proud of our girls because of how much school we miss and because of the degree programs they are in,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “Most of them are in business degree programs and of course Amparo is in biochemistry.”

Student-athletes must maintain a 3.20 GPA to qualify for the first-team, while second-team members must uphold a 3.00 GPA. All nominees must participate in at least 60 percent of all the school's scheduled contests. Freshman and transfer students are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

“They are the true picture of what being a student-athlete is all about,” said Ludvigson. “They don't take school lightly, just like they don't take golf lightly. They are really driven and I am really proud of them.”

Gala, Jacques and Stelzer along with sophomore Heather Wright and true freshman Kendall Dye are competing for Oklahoma in the Big 12 Tournament in Lincoln Neb. April 17-19.
