Sooners Tee Off Spring Season in Puerto Rico

Women's Golf Shoots for Big 12 Title

April 15, 2006 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. After the conclusion of the regular season at last week's Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, the Oklahoma women's golf team will head to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big 12 Championships being held April 17-19 (Monday through Wednesday).

The postseason tournament will be played at the 6,201-yard, par-72 Country Club of Lincoln golf course. The three-day event will feature a 54-hole format, with 18 holes being played each day. All conference teams will be represented, including two ranked in the top 25: Texas A&M (14) and Oklahoma State (18).

“We are ready to play some really good golf,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “We need good golf from all five golfers. We haven't been consistent. Some of them will have really good rounds and then have rounds that aren't so good. So we have been working on that.”

The same lineup that placed sixth at last week's Susie Maxwell tournament will compete for Oklahoma at the Big 12 Championships.  The lineup includes sophomore Heather Wright, true freshman Kendall Dye, sophomore Kelly Jacques, lone senior Amparo Gala and junior Jaclyn Stelzer.

“I feel confident about our lineup,” said Ludvigson. “We've been working on our short game and putting drills because that is what we were lacking at the Susie Maxwell. On the mental side we are determined, we've set higher goals and I think we have a good foundation.”

The tournament champion will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Central Regional held in College Station, Texas, May 11-13. Individuals advancing to the NCAA Central Regional will be selected based on performance throughout the season in head-to-head competition.

The Sooners have won conference championships in 1978, 1981, 1990 and 2000. Three individuals have won individual championships, all in Big Eight play.
