Women's Golf Finishes Sixth at Susie Maxwell

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a final-round 308 (+49) on Monday to finish in a tie for sixth place at the 17-team Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman. The tournament, won by Oklahoma State, was held at the par-72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Course.
The Sooners' three-round total of 913 placed them 46 strokes behind OSU, which set a tournament record with its 867. SMU finished in second place (892) and was followed by Texas (905), Nebraska (906), Kansas State (911), OU and North Texas (913).
Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg captured medalist honors by one stroke with her 215 (-1) total. She shot a final-round 75 after shooting 72 in the first and 68 in the second.
“We were disappointed overall but I think there were some real positives,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “Obviously Heather had two great rounds but was a little disappointed with today's round. She is getting closer and closer. And Jaclyn, our number five player, shooting even today was great.”
OU was led by sophomore Heather Wright, who placed 19th with a 227 (+11). In round one Wright recorded a season-low 74 (+2), which was replaced with a 72 (E) in round two and followed with a third-round 81 (+9). This marks Wright's first top-20 finish of the season. Sophomore Kelly Jacques finished the tournament with a 230 (+14) and a tie for 28th after shooting a 78 (+6) in the third round. True freshman Kendall Dye posted a third-round 80 (+8), good for a total 232 (+16) and a 39th place tie.
Lone senior Amparo Gala and redshirt freshman Sydney Lee tied for 44th place with a 233 (+17). Gala carded a third round 78 (+6), while Lee, who competed individually, registered an 80 (+8) in the third round. The Susie Maxwell was Lee's first collegiate tournament.
With a career-low 72 (E) in the third round, junior Jaclyn Stelzer produced a tie for 50th and a final score of 234 (+18).
Competing individually, Staci Smoot and Megan Goodwin tied for 55th with three-round totals of 236 (+20). Charli Bullard, also competing individually, tied for 89th place after producing a 254 (+38).
North Texas' Brooke Tanner hit the shot of the day, a hole in one on the 113-yard par-3 11th.
“We beat some teams that we needed to beat and I think it just fueled our fire,” said Ludvigson. “Everyone came off the golf course today saying what they needed to work on before we head to the Big 12.”
Next up for Oklahoma is the Big 12 Tournament April 17-19 in Lincoln, Neb.
