Former OU Golfer Burks Gears Up For LPGA Tour

March 06, 2006 | Women's Golf

Audra Burks, former Oklahoma women's golfer (1987-1989), will compete for nearly $50 million in prize money in 34 tournaments as part of the 2006 Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour.

Burks joined the LPGA Tour in 2000 after earning exempt status for finishing third on the 1999 SBC FUTURES Tour money list.  She played on the FUTURES Tour from 1990-99.  In 2001, Burks had her best tournament finish, a tie for eighth, at the First Union Betsy King Classic and during that same year posted a career-low 65 during the third round of the Wendy's Championship for Children at New Albany.

While on the FUTURES tour, Burks won one title, the 1998 Greater Lima Futures Open.  Burks also finished second at the Southwestern Bell Futures Classic, JWA Anheuser Busch Futures Classic and the Futures Tour Championship.

“She is very even keeled, very strong and most of all she has fun playing the game,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson.  “She hasn't lost the true sense of the golf game, it really is her number one passion.”

During her time at OU, the Little Rock, Ark., native recorded four top-10 finishes, including medalist honors at the 1988 Cyclone Golf Classic, a third-place showing at the 1988 Big Eight Championship and a tie for sixth at OU's 1988 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.

“I really enjoyed coaching Audra and learned a lot from her,” said Ludvigson.  “She is an inspiration for the kids on the team right now because of her hard work, dedication and passion for the game of golf.”

As a professional she has competed in 130 tournaments, making 67 cuts and recording four top-10 finishes, and has averaged 73.39 strokes per round.

Burks will be at the University of Oklahoma for the women's golf Alumni Weekend, held the same weekend as the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, April 9-10.  Joining Burks for the Alumni Weekend will be former OU golfer and LPGA tour mate Isabelle Beisiegel.
