Sooners Drop 6-1 Decision to Texas
March 31, 2006 | Men's Tennis
AUSTIN, Texas The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team (14-5, 1-2) dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 3 Texas on Friday at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin.
The Sooners won the doubles point, which they have done in the past 11 matches, against the Longhorns. At the No. 2 position, senior Tommy Garrison and sophomore Federico Chavarria pulled an upset over No. 28 Travis Helgeson and Michael Venus, 9-8, after winning the tiebreaker 7-5. Senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka also won their match after winning the tiebreaker against Callum Beale and Miguel Reyes Varela, which gave Oklahoma a 1-0 lead.
Despite a strong performance in doubles, the Sooners could not overcome the Longhorns' solid lineup and lost all singles matches in straight sets. Oklahoma stuck with the same lineup as in all Big 12 matches so far this season with Velicka, Ivanov, Garrison, freshman Sergey Avdeyev, senior Lee Gregg and sophomore Ryan Thomas competing.
Gregg, who had won 12 consecutives matches going into this contest, saw his winning streak snapped. Despite the loss, Gregg is 17-5 overall and 14-4 this spring, which are team bests.
The Sooners will compete in one final road match this weekend as they travel to College Station, Texas, to face Texas A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
