OU Finishes Liz Murphey Classic in Athens, Ga.

March 26, 2006 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. The Oklahoma women's golf team finished the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. Sunday in 16th place with a total 967 (+103).  The Sooners ended the tournament 64 strokes behind tournament champion Gerogia.

Sophomore Heather Wright led the Sooners throughout the three-day tournament and tied for 37th in the end.  Wright started the tournament tying her career-low round of 76 (+4) and ended with a third-round 77 (+5) for a total 235 (+19).

“We had a rough tournament but one positive is that Heather played really well for two rounds,” said head coach Carol Ludvigson.  “But overall we were really disappointed in our performance.”

True freshman Kendall Dye tied for 67th after shooting an 80 (+8) in the third round for a final score of 244 (+28).  With a 245 (+29) total, sophomore Kelly Jacques tied for 71st place after posing an 81 (+9) in the final round.  After carding a third-round 82 (+10), junior Megan Goodwin recorded a tie for 75th and a 247 (+31) total.  Junior Jaclyn Stelzer tied for 82nd with a final total of 249 (+33) after shooting an 86 (+14) in today's final round.

“We had trouble on the greens,” said Ludvigsion.  “They had Bermuda greens and we are used to bent greens so that caused us to miss a couple of putts.”

The tournament was held at the 6,228-yard, par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course.

“We've been playing well the whole semester except for this tournament and now we've got a couple of weeks to get ready for the Susie Maxwell and we are going to keep this tournament in mind,” said Ludvigson.  “We walked away learning a lot and now we are looking for momentum and taking that into the Big 12.”

The Sooners will finish the regular season at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, hosted by OU on April 9-10.  The Big 12 Championship will be played April 17-19 in Lincoln, Neb., with the tournament champion receiving an automatic berth to the NCAA Central Regional in College Station, Texas on May 11-13.  The top 10 individuals at the Big 12 Championship will be honored.
