Sooners Hit Practice Fields in Full Pads

Sooners Hit Practice Fields in Full Pads

March 24, 2006 | Football

NORMAN, Okla. -- Spring practice finally moved outdoors on Friday afternoon as the Sooners worked in cool but sunny weather on the Bud Wilkinson Practice Fields.

An early spring snow melted quickly in Norman on Thursday and the fields were deemed dry enough for the team to move outside. Tuesday's and Wednesday's sessions were held on the synthetic turf inside the Everest Training Facility.

The Sooners also broke out full pads for the first time. For those unfamiliar with OU's practice routine, the defense wore white jerseys while the offense wore crimson. An extensive photo gallery of Friday's action is linked below.

After the practice OU head coach Bob Stoops announced that defensive tackle Brian Simmons had moved from the defensive line over to offense.  The move is similar to those made in recent years that saw Jammal Brown and Davin Joseph move from defense to offense.

"He looks like a natural in there," Stoops said."

On Saturday, the Sooners will hold their first spring scrimmage inside the stadium. The workout begins at 11 a.m., and gates will open at 10 a.m.

Stoops said the scrimmage will consist of approximately 60 plays.

"We'll keep it pretty basic," he said.  "We'll have some situations, but mostly we'll just be moving the football."

Fans are encouraged to print the one-page roster linked above and bring to the scrimmage for reference. Newcomers and several returning players are sporting new numbers.

The actual scrimmage is expected to be at noon and will conclude at 1:30 p.m. Gates 1 and 11 will be open for entry into Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Both are on the west side. All university parking lots are open as is customary on the weekends.
