Big 12 Semifinals: OU and Mizzou

Women's Hoops Talks Sweet 16

March 22, 2006 | Women's Basketball

NORMAN, Okla. -- OU head coach Sherri Coale and several members of the Oklahoma women's basketball team met with approximately 20 members of the local media following their Wednesday practice at the Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners will leave for San Antonio and the Sweet 16 on Thursday afternoon and continue preparation for the their Saturday game.  The Sooners and Cardinal will meet at the AT&T Center at 1:30 p.m.  The Sweet 16 game will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN HD.

Below are excerpts from the interviews with Coach Coale and a few players.

Sherri Coale

On success in tourney:
"I think our success in the tournament depends most heavily on us and not who our opponent is. I think were at the point where we spend more time talking about, thinking about, and being concerned about Oklahoma than we are about who were playing, and that is a good spot to be in. Many times at this point in the year we have not been at the juncture where were able to do that. I think all 16 teams that are left are very, very good basketball teams and you have to be prepared every night. Were playing pretty well right now. I like the way it feels in our gym right now."

Oklahoma vs. Stanford | Saturday, 1:30 p.m. (CT) | San Antonio
OU NCAA Tournament Central

On possibility of this being a National Championship team:
"This group is special and I will definitely say that. I think we have good pieces and I think we blend those pieces together well. In two more games we will see."

On playing in San Antonio:
"Were were real excited to get into the San Antonio bracket. I think that was a bigger piece of the celebration than who the teams might be because our philosophy has always been that you have to play all the good teams, if you want to win the national championship. It does not matter if you play them in the first round or the third round you have to beat all the good teams. We love the fact that we don't have to travel too far and that were in our same time zone. Our fans can fairly easily travel and support us and of course we have such fond memories of San Antonio in 2002."

Britney Brown

On Stanford:
"I think were a great match up with stanford. They have some great players. Candice Wiggins is a great guard and they have a great post player that will match up well with our post, so it should be interesting."

On team:
"We have so much fun together when were out on the court playing and it translates into good play. We love playing together and we want to keep going and keep winning"

On Courtney Paris' domination:
"Courtney has dominated every game in the tournament that we have played in and when that happens we have won. We have players at every position that can help our team win. As long as everyone keeps producing we will keep winning."

On not having any pressure going into Sweet 16:
"We have higher goals that we have set for ourselves other than the sweet 16. We just want to keep playing our game and hopefully make it to Boston. Making it to Boston is not the only goal, we obviously would like to win it all."

Erin Higgins

On making first couple of shots to help confidence:
"It does do a little something for your confidence. If you miss your first one and make your second shot it is still the same. If you miss your first three of four you might not be as adept at shooting your next one. When you make your first one it makes you more comfortable and gives you that confidence to shoot again."

On matchup with Stanford:
"The Stanford matchup is really, really exciting. It seems like everytime were in the NCAA tournament were with Stanford, they have a great program and a great team I feel like we matchup very well with them. I feel like its going to be a great game in San Antonio and I think we will have a lot of fans."

On Candice Wiggins:
"She is a great player. Just watching the first half against Florida State, she made a lot of athletic plays. I dont think we will have just one person guarding her, I think we will play her like we did Sophia Young and Latoya Bond in the Big 12 tournament. The whole team will try and limit her and the amount of touches she gets."

Courtney Paris

On going to Sweet 16:
"We have done a great job in preparing for the sweet 16 and were hoping to go even further than this. We just need to keep working hard and keep getting better and get down to San Antonio and take care of business."

On Stanford:
"I grew up in the bay area so I have seen them a lot. They are very tough and have great post and a great shooter in Candice Wiggins. Its going to be a great matchup and they are going to pose our toughest matchup of the year. I'm really excited about it."

On playing in San Antonio:
"This is very exciting and the cool thing is everyone is getting to experience this. None of these guys (fellow teammates) have ever experienced the Sweet 16 either so were excited. We have more business to take care of and were not done yet so were just trying ot stay focused."

On coaching staff having been to San Antonio:
"This one of the reasons why I was comfortable coming here and hopefully going far in the tournament is knowing that I did have a coach that had been there before and knows the way. We have a program that is capable of such things. Coach Coale is very excited and thinks were in a good situation, so were just going to folllow her lead."
