Sooners Finish Eighth, Dye Ties For 11th

March 19, 2006 | Women's Golf

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team finished the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational Sunday in eighth place with a 944 (+80).  The Sooners shot rounds of 319 (+31), 309 (+21) and 316 (+28) to finish 37 strokes behind tournament champion Duke.

Kendall Dye and Kelly Jacques have alternated leading the way for OU this season.  This time is was the true freshman that came out ahead.  Dye completed the tournament with a career-best 11th place finish, which also marks her first career top-15 finish.  Dye posted a total 231 (+15) after shooting a 78 (+6) in the third round.  Jacques, a sophomore, really stepped it up during today's 18 holes when she fired a 73 (+1), which boosted her up to a tie for 22nd place, up from yesterday's tie for 58th.  Jacques finished with a total 236 (+20).

“Kelly shooting a 73 today was huge, she had 5 bogeys in this one round,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson.  “And Kendall's tie for 11th was a very good finish for her, especially in such a strong field.  So we are very excited about their finishes.”

Sophomore Heather Wright recorded a season-high finish when she tied for 29th place with a final score of 237 (+21) after shooting a third-round 80 (+8).  With an 85 (+13) on the last day and a three-round total of 243 (+27), junior Jaclyn Stelzer tied for 52nd place.   Lone senior Amparo Gala carded an 86 (+14) in the final round and finished the tournament with a 247 (+31) and a tie for 65th place.  Competing as an individual, redshirt freshman Staci Smoot finished in 80th place with a total 261 (+45).

“We felt pretty good overall about our finish,” said Ludvigson.  “We beat some teams that we really needed to beat head-to-head for our regional standings, but unfortunately we did not beat Texas.  We lost a few shots today that we shouldn't have, but we still feel like we are making a lot of progress.”

The Sooners will be back in action March 24-26 at the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.  Two weeks later (April 9-10) the team will compete in the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman.
