NORMAN, Okla. -- The advent of spring in Oklahoma brings longer days, warmer temperatures and thunderstorms. March also returns the Sooners to the football practice fields.
OU begins spring practice on Monday, March 20. Over the next week, SoonerSports.com will review the 2005 campaign, break down the 2006 squad by position and offer a preview of the upcoming season.
Visit 2006 OU Spring Football Central for complete coverage including the daily practice schedule, updated roster and spring guide.
OKLAHOMA QUARTERBACKS
Rhett Bomar became the starter in game two and began the process of getting better. Slow out of the gates, he finished with a flurry. Over the last five games of the season, he completed 57 percent of his passes, threw for 1,008 yards and fired six touchdowns with just three interceptions.
At semester break, Oklahoma added junior college quarterback Joey Halzle, and the Sooners will welcome prepster Sam Bradford in August. The Sooners still have Paul Thompson, too. He moved to receiver during the 2005 season but continued to work at the quarterback position.
Hays McEachern, who holds for placements, also is in the mix.

OKLAHOMA RECEIVERS
Youth was served at receiver last year and, to borrow some street slang, that same group “served” several secondaries. Three freshmen were on the field a lot for Oklahoma in Malcolm Kelly, Juaquin Iglesias and Manuel Johnson. Kelly topped the team in receptions (33) and yards (471).
Iglesias was brilliant in clutch situations (caught the game-winner in the second overtime against Baylor) and Johnson is perhaps the fastest of the three.
The veteran is Paul Thompson, a senior, who converted from quarterback early in 2005.
Depth is good at receiver, too, with the likes of Quentin Chaney, Fred Strong and Eric Huggins. Several gifted newcomers will arrive in the fall.
At tight end, the Sooners look to Joe Jon Finley as the lone returnee with game experience. Also back are redshirt freshmen Aaron Cummings and converted defensive end Brody Eldridge.
The signing period yielded a gem in Jermaine Gresham. He will join the team in August.
