Mo Morial Invitational

Women's Golf Records Highest Finish of the Season
March 12, 2006 | Women's Golf
NORMAN, Okla. - With a 943 (+79), the Oklahoma women's golf team finished the “Mo” Morial Invitational Sunday in fifth place. The Sooners shot a 315 (+27) in the third round and finished 20 strokes behind tournament champion Texas A&M.
Sophomore Kelly Jacques recorded her third career top-10 finish after posting her third career top-20 finish at last week's Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Jacques scored a total 230 (+14) this weekend and tied for eighth place. Sophomore Heather Wright finished tied for 21st place with a total 237 (+21) after matching her career-low 76 (+4) in Sunday's final round. After carding a 238 (+22), true freshman Kendall Dye tied for 24th place. Junior Jaclyn Stelzer fired a three-round total of 243 (+27) and tied for 40th while senior Amparo Gala finished with a 248 (+32), good for a 59th place tie.
“I'm happy that we beat teams that we really needed to beat head-to-head,” said OU head coach Carol Ludvigson. “Some teams were ranked in the top 15 so I feel very positive about that.”
The 18-team field included seven other Big 12 schools and three ranked teams. The tournament was hosted by Texas A&M and was played at the 6,226-yard, par-72 Traditions Golf Course.
“What's really neat is that this is the course where the NCAA Central Regional will be played, so we really showed that we can play this course and can beat some of the top teams out there,” said Ludvigson. “I feel good about our team as a whole, it was our best finish of the year and it gives us momentum before going to Texas.”
The Sooners will be back in action next weekend at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas (Mar. 17-19). Then the team will head to Athens, Ga., for the Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic (Mar. 24-26) followed by the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (Apr. 9-10 in Norman).
