NORMAN, Okla. -- Former Sooner tight end Trent Smith was recently featured in an article on NFLEurope.com.
 
Smith played for the Sooners from 1999-2002. At the conclusion of his career in Norman, Smith was the all-time receptions leader for tight ends and No. 3 among all receivers with 164 career catches. Smith was also tied for No. 2 on the Oklahoma career touchdown receptions list with 16.

As a trained pilot, Trent Smith knows something about getting things off the ground. At this point, the Amsterdam Admirals tight end is hoping that it will be his career that takes off with a standout season in NFL Europe.

Selected in the seventh round of the 2003 draft by the Baltimore Ravens after shining at tight end for Oklahoma, Smith's career hit the buffers when he suffered an injury on his first NFL reception, in a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.  

Three years on, Smith has been allocated to Europe by his new NFL team the San Francisco 49ers - to try to bring back some of the magic that made him such a hot collegiate prospect. 
 
“I did play last year and prove to myself that I could play in the NFL, but I felt like I had lost a lot my awareness on the field and some of my overall confidence, and I thought that by coming here having not played very much I could get some of that back,” explains Smith.
