TULSA, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team earned a win on Sunday by defeating Memphis, 6-1, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa. The Sooners improve to 3-2 in the spring season.
Memphis took its only point with wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. James Spence and Sam Withell defeated senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka, 8-6 in a tough match at the No. 1 position. Senior Lee Gregg and freshman Sergey Avdeyev also dropped an 8-6 decision to Garrison Pilant and Michael Jetter at the No. 3 spot. Seniors Tommy Garrison and Matt Long, who competed together for the first time in the spring, downed Matt Brewer and Bryan Bankester, 8-5, in the only doubles win for the Sooners.
The Sooners dominated the Tigers in singles action, winning all matches in straight sets. Sophomore Ryan Thomas saw his first match of the spring and handed Pilant a 6-2, 7-6 defeat at the No. 6 spot. Velicka, who played at No. 1, leads the team with a 3-1 spring record and a 9-3 overall mark in singles.
