NORMAN, Okla. After spending two days in 11th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 301 (+13) Sunday and finished in 10th place with a final score of 921 (+57). The Sooners finished 36 strokes behind first-place Florida.
Sophomore Kelly Jacques added a top-20 finish to the record books after shooting a 73 (+1) in the third round for a three-round total of 224 (+8) and a tie for 18th place. This marks Jacques' third career top-20 finish, in addition to her two top-10 finishes of the 2005 fall season.
Sophomore Heather Wright finished the tournament tied for 40th place after posting a 76 (+4) in the final round for a 232 (+16) total. After carding a third-round 76 (+4), true freshman Kendall Dye tied for 47th place with a 234 (+18). Lone senior Amparo Gala fired an 82 (+10) in the third round and ended the tournament tied for 52nd place with a 237 (+21). Staci Smoot's third-round 76 (+4) contributed to her overall score of 246 (+30) and tie for 75th place.
“It was a really positive day for us and we can take that momentum into Texas A&M,” said head coach Carol Ludvigson. “We beat a couple of schools that we really needed to beat head-to-head on a regional level, so we're excited about that and of course we are really excited about how well Kelly played.”
OU's next tournament will be the “Mo” Morial Invitational held March 10-12. The Sooners will also compete in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational (Mar. 17-19), Liz Murphy Collegiate Classic (Mar. 24-26) and the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic (Apr. 9-10 in Norman).
