Men's Tennis Shuts Out Missouri State, 7-0

NORMAN, Okla. The University of Oklahoma men's tennis team blanked Missouri State, 7-0, and claimed all matches in straight sets in its first home match of the spring season on Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman. The Sooners improve their record to 4-3 overall and 3-1 against regional opponents.
“This was a great way to start our home season,” said head coach Paul Lockwood. “Our men came ready to play, even though the conditions were tough for both teams.”
The weather proved to be a challenge with wind gusts reaching over 20 mph. Despite the conditions, the No. 55 Sooners started off strong in doubles by winning at all three positions. Senior Alexei Ivanov and junior Marek Velicka were the first to pick up a win by defeating John Kellert and Jiri Spousta, 8-3. Sophomore Federico Chavarria and senior Tommy Garrison put Oklahoma on the board with an 8-5 victory over Nenad Curcic and Jeff Stone, and senior Matt Long and sophomore Ryan Thomas rounded out the doubles competition by handing Rodrigo Borges and Marcos Queiroz an 8-6 loss.
In singles action, Garrison added another point for the Sooners by earning a victory over Curcic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Lee Gregg continued OU's momentum by defeating Querioz, 6-3, 6-0, and at the No. 1 spot, Velicka clenched the match for Oklahoma by claiming the win over Spousta, 6-4, 6-1. Ivanov, Long and Thomas also recorded victories at the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
The match marked the second time this season that Oklahoma has shut out its opponent. The Sooners held Nebraska scoreless on Jan. 22 in the ITA Central Region Team Indoor Championships.
The Sooners have a day off before competing in a double-header on Monday in Norman. Oklahoma will face Oral Roberts at 1 p.m. and will follow with a match against Cameron at 4 p.m. Admission is free to all home matches.
